Jim: A class action plaintiff may be entitled to a "class representative enhancement" award at the end of the case. Although there is no law specifically stating that a lead plaintiff can get a class rep's enhancement, it is commonplace for the lead plaintiff to get some sort of extra award for being the representative for the class. We have seen them range from $500 to $25,000, though the amount will generally be greater if each member of the class gets more money. Sometimes defendants refuse to pay class representative enhancements, so there is no guarantee that it is available. However, if the court agrees to allow the lead plaintiff to receive the class rep enhancement award, it is something that will give the lead plaintiff a bit more than what he or she would have received had the class action allegations been left out.
